…Says existing institutions already perform same function

A heated moment played out at the Senate on Tuesday as Senator Adams Oshiomhole openly opposed a bill seeking to establish the Training and Nigerian Development Institute, questioning its relevance and necessity.

Speaking during the plenary session, Oshiomhole said he could not see the merit in rushing the bill, stressing that the country already had several training-related institutions and departments performing similar roles.

Oshiomhole stated: “What is the meaning of Training and Nigerian Development? We have established several institutions, and every organization has a training department.
“Why are we creating laws for everything, for Training and Nigerian Development? It doesn’t make sense to me.”

The former Edo State Governor further argued that the legislative chamber should prioritise bills with clear national value, noting that laws are meant to be substantive and interpretable by courts, not motions passed in haste.

He cautioned lawmakers against wasting valuable time on repetitive institutions, insisting that effective oversight of existing agencies would yield better development outcomes.
