Civil servants in Ondo State will resume work on Monday, January 5, 2026, following the declaration of Friday, January 2, as a work-free day by the state government to ease workers’ return from the New Year holiday.
The development followed deliberations at the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday and presided over by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, on December 31, 2025.
According to the statement, the Head of Service, Mr Bayo Philip, described the decision as a relief for workers and urged public servants and residents to take note of the revised resumption date.
The statement reads in part:
“Civil servants in Ondo State will resume work on Monday, January 5, 2026, following the declaration of Friday, January 2, as a work-free day to allow workers adequate time to return from the New Year holiday.
“The Head of Service described the decision as a relief for workers and urged public servants and members of the public to take note of the revised resumption date.”
The statement also disclosed that:“Monday, January 5, will feature the state’s customary first workday prayer meeting at the Governor’s Office complex.”
Meanwhile, the Ondo State Government has approved new infrastructure projects aimed at boosting connectivity and development, particularly in the riverine areas of the state.
The Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Engr Abiola Olawoye, said the Executive Council approved the 24-kilometre Aboto–Atijere Road and the 1-kilometre Sabomi Road in Ese-Odo Local Government Area.
He described the approvals as part of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to accelerating development across the state.
In chieftaincy matters, the government appointed Owei Kekemeke as the pioneer Amananawei of Agadagda-Obon in Ese-Odo Local Government Area, marking the first time the community would have a formally recognised monarch.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, said the government was also ready to fill other vacant traditional stools once communities complete the necessary selection processes.
He added that warrant chiefs had been approved for the appointment of a new Alade Okun of Alade in Idanre, clearing the way for the installation of a new king.
On fiscal reforms, the State Government approved a new Tax Bill for transmission to the Ondo State House of Assembly for legislative consideration.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, said the bill was designed to align Ondo State’s tax system with the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and other federal tax reforms scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026.
He explained that the proposed law seeks to promote efficiency, transparency and sustainable revenue generation, while also providing relief for low-income earners and small businesses.
“This approval marks a proactive step towards integrating Ondo State into the evolving national tax landscape. It will enable us to better serve our people while contributing to Nigeria’s broader economic objectives,” Ajulo said.
