The Ogun State Government has ordered the immediate closure of African Refractory and Allied Products Limited (ARAP) following a viral video detailing the harrowing health ordeal of a former employee.
The company, which specializes in crushing quartz stones into fine powder for steel furnace lining, was shut down to allow for a comprehensive investigation into allegations of severe occupational health negligence.
The enforcement action was triggered by a video featuring Bartholomew Aniemeka, who claimed to have contracted silicosis a debilitating lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust during his tenure at the firm before his departure in June 2025.
Ogun state Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, led a high-powered fact-finding mission to the site alongside officials from the Ministry of Environment and the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA).
During the visit, Oresanya declared that the facility would remain sealed until the state determines the veracity of the claims and assesses the company’s safety standards.
Regarding the victim’s welfare, the state government confirmed that Aniemeka is currently in stable condition at TopMed Hospital in Ogijo.
Accompanied by his sister, who had initially raised the alarm over his deteriorating health, Aniemeka has been assured of full medical support from the state.
Officials noted that a series of specialized diagnostic tests are being conducted to ascertain his exact medical status.
The Ogun State Government has reassured the public that it is managing the situation with the utmost urgency.
Oresanya emphasized that the administration is committed to a logical and transparent conclusion, ensuring that both industrial accountability and the protection of citizens’ health remain a top priority.
