Former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Waziri Bulama, has said no single region in Nigeria can secure the presidency without forging alliances with others.
Speaking in an interview on Arise Television, Bulama stressed that Nigeria’s diversity makes political cooperation inevitable, insisting that broad-based coalitions across ethnic and regional lines remain the only path to power.
His comments followed recent remarks by Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, who argued that no politician could win the presidency without the North and that the region would soon decide where its votes would go.
But Bulama countered that while the North is an influential bloc, it cannot singlehandedly deliver the presidency.“Neither would a northerner win an election without the support of other parts of the country,” he said, adding that alliances are the backbone of Nigeria’s democracy.
He recalled the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s electoral history, noting that despite consistently securing around 12 million votes across three elections, Buhari only won the presidency after building alliances beyond the North.
“It was an ideological movement that connected with citizens across the country, not just in the North but nationwide,” Bulama explained.
He added that true party membership requires individuals to rise above ethnic, religious, and regional identities to embrace collective values that strengthen the political system.
