Nigerian Portuguese Ambassador presents letters of credence

Her Excellency, Erelu Angela Adebayo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Portuguese Republic has presented her Letters of Credence to His Excellency António José Seguro, President of the Portuguese Republic.

The ceremony took place at the historic Belém Palace in Lisbon on Monday, July 27, 2026.

The presentation of the Letters of Credence marks the official commencement of Ambassador Adebayo’s diplomatic mission in Portugal.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it reaffirms the longstanding, cordial relations between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Portuguese Republic, a relationship built on mutual respect, friendship, and cooperation.

During her audience with President Seguro, Ambassador Adebayo conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as well as from the Government and people of Nigeria.

She emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening bilateral ties with Portugal, highlighting key areas such as trade and investment, maritime security, energy, agriculture, education, cultural exchange, and tourism.

The Ambassador also underscored Nigeria’s focus on economic diplomacy and enhancing collaboration on pressing regional and global issues.

These include peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, and the broader Africa–European Union Partnership.
In response, President Seguro warmly welcomed Ambassador Adebayo to Portugal. He reaffirmed his country’s commitment to deepening its relationship with Nigeria, acknowledging Nigeria’s strategic leadership in Africa and its vital role as a key partner in advancing Africa-Europe cooperation.

Ambassador Adebayo expressed her strong determination to work closely with the Portuguese Government, the diplomatic and private sectors, and the Nigerian diaspora in Portugal to consolidate these bonds of friendship and drive mutually beneficial cooperation.
