Andy Burnham emerges as UK’s new Prime Minister

Andy Burnham has emerged as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Burnham emergence follows an invitation by King Charles III to form a new government, Buckingham Palace confirmed.

In a statement, the Palace announced that the King held an audience with Mr. Burnham and invited him to form a new administration.

“The Rt Hon Andrew Burnham MP accepted The King’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury,” the statement read.

Buckingham Palace also confirmed that Ms. Marie-France van Heel was received by the King during the proceedings.

Mr. Burnham arrived at Buckingham Palace shortly after the resignation of outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer. 

Following his audience with the King, he departed for 10 Downing Street, where he is expected to begin assembling his Cabinet and outlining the key priorities of his administration.
