NERC mandates improved communication for power sector reforms

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has called for enhanced communication across the power sector to improve public understanding and support for ongoing reforms.

The Chairman of NERC, Mr Musiliu Oseni, made the call while chairing the Q1 2026 Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Stakeholders’ Meeting held in Lagos on March 26, 2026.

The quarterly meeting provided a platform for stakeholders to review sector performance, assess ongoing reforms and set new targets aimed at improving electricity service delivery nationwide.

Mr Oseni emphasised the need for a strategic shift towards proactive public engagement, noting that effective communication is critical to building trust and ensuring the success of reforms in the sector.

Key issues discussed at the meeting included progress on critical power infrastructure such as the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Energy Management System (EMS) projects.

According to stakeholders, the SCADA/EMS initiatives, when completed, are expected to reduce system disturbances and strengthen grid stability across the country.

Participants also called for clear and consistent communication of sector projects and reforms to the public, stressing the need to raise awareness on the long-term benefits of ongoing efforts.

Operators in the electricity value chain were urged to project confidence and optimism, as public perception plays a key role in the sector’s progress.

The meeting was attended by the leadership of NERC, State Electricity Regulators (SERs) and operators across the electricity value chain.
