NDC calls for suspension of Lagos CP over alleged political partisanship

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to immediately suspend and sanction the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, following his appearance at a partisan political gathering.

The opposition party’s demand comes on the heels of viral video footage circulating across social media platforms showing CP Tijani in full uniform attending the inauguration of the Lagos State Chapter Executive Committee of the City Boy Movement in Ikeja.

The City Boy Movement is a political support group aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the viral clips, the police chief is seen arriving with his entourage, exchanging pleasantries with political figures, and interacting with attendees wearing campaign paraphernalia bearing political logos associated with the ruling party.

Reacting to the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, the NDC condemned CP Tijani’s presence at the event, warning that his actions severely compromise public trust and signal overt bias ahead of upcoming elections.

The congress further demanded CP Tijani’s immediate resignation, stating that his participation at a political function denigrates the institutional integrity and neutrality of the Nigeria Police Force.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the appearance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani, at a partisan event promoting a particular candidate in the upcoming general election,” the NDC stated.

“We understand that the rudderless APC-led administrations have no iota of respect for our institutions, but seeing a Commissioner of Police at a partisan event can only point to one thing: HE WILL BE BIASED in the discharge of his duties during the elections. We therefore demand that the Police authorities immediately suspend and sanction the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani,” the statement continued.

Addressing Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu directly, the NDC urged the police high command to take decisive action to restore public confidence.

“Greetings, IGP Tunji Disu. You must act on this immediately. Your men cannot continue to be partisan. The Nigeria Police Force must explain to Nigerians what the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani, was doing at a partisan event. Enough is enough,” the statement added.

Outlining its core demands, the congress urged police authorities to issue a firm commitment to strict institutional neutrality, protect voters and opposition supporters, and ensure the safety of lives and property regardless of political affiliation.
