NADDC unveils vehicle dealership registration framework to combat car theft

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has launched a National Vehicle Dealership Registration Framework designed to curb the rising cases of car theft and enhance data tracking within Nigeria’s automotive sector.

The Director-General of the NADDC, Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, stated that the initiative would empower authorities to track the origin and movement of vehicles while providing accurate data on those sold, stolen, or currently in circulation.

He explained that the framework provides vital insights into vehicle sources, sales patterns, and market trends, adding that the resulting data would prove invaluable to investors and policymakers in the automotive manufacturing space.

Speaking at the official launch, Osanipin described the platform as a digital gateway intended to modernize and streamline automotive business operations across the country.
The framework was developed following extensive stakeholder engagement across multiple regions, incorporating critical input from key industry players, including the Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria (AMDON).

“This framework reflects the collective input of industry stakeholders who have consistently called for transparency, professionalism, and a system that distinguishes certified dealers from informal operators,” Osanipin remarked.

He added that the initiative aligns with the National Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP) 2023-2033, which aims to position Nigeria as a regional hub for automotive production and investment.

The registration system is also expected to enhance access to financing for registered dealers through partnerships with institutions such as the Bank of Industry, offering low-interest funding to facilitate business expansion.

The framework will strengthen market regulation by ensuring that only certified dealers participate in government procurement and major corporate transactions under the "Nigeria First" policy.

The council expressed strong confidence that the initiative will improve transparency, bolster regulation, and support the long-term growth of Nigeria’s automotive industry.
