Kwara warns estate agents against exploitation of residents

By Muyideen Aliyu

The Kwara State Government has cautioned estate agents against exploiting residents for personal gain, warning that sharp practices in the housing sector will not be tolerated.

The warning was issued by the State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Segun Ogunsola, during a meeting with delegates of the Estate Rent Commission Agents Association of Nigeria (ERCAAN) in Ilorin.

Ogunsola emphasized that effective regulation of the estate management sector is essential to improving citizens’ welfare without placing undue financial pressure on residents seeking housing. He stressed the need to sanitize the sector and promote transparency in its operations.

According to him, the Kwara State Housing Corporation has been mandated to address housing management issues and ensure proper oversight. He urged estate agents and property managers to collaborate with the agency to achieve effective regulation and deliver quality services to the public.

The Commissioner also assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to due process, noting that modalities would be developed to implement proposals presented by the association.

Earlier, the Team Lead of ERCAAN, Alabi Ayoola, expressed concern over irregularities in the estate management sector in the state. He highlighted the need for stronger regulation to protect residents and ensure fairness across the housing system.

Ayoola added that the association is willing to partner with the state government to address existing challenges and improve standards within the sector.
