The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has stated that the controversy involving Chinedu Okeke, the top scorer in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), remains unresolved.
In a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, the examination body refuted widespread claims that all matters related to Okeke had been settled.
Describing the reports as “malicious falsehood,” JAMB expressed dismay over what it described as deliberate efforts by individuals to manipulate social media platforms for attention.
“We are alarmed by the lengths to which some individuals will go to gain attention on social media. Does character mean nothing to people anymore? This will be the last time we will respond to such falsehood. We have had enough and will not allow anybody to thrive on our shoulders,” the board said.
JAMB accused Okeke of discrepancies in his personal records, stating that he declared Lagos State origin in 2021 to benefit from that state’s admission quota, only to later switch to Anambra State in 2025.
The board also revealed that Okeke, currently a 400-level medical student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, attempted to register for another course in 2025.
“JAMB is a statutory body, not a political party. We won’t sit idly by while individuals use our platform to play sectional politics or draw social media traffic,” it stated.
Reiterating its stance on integrity and accountability, JAMB said it would continue working closely with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to verify candidates’ credentials and personal data.
“We do not sweep issues under the rug. Candidates who aspire to leadership roles must act with integrity and character,” the board added.
While affirming Okeke’s status as a legitimate student, JAMB said it would notify the Medical and Dental Council to consider his delisting if the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, confirms any wrongdoing on his part.
