A Yoruba Christian investigative journalist, Mr. Ibikunle Ajose is now in hiding after receiving death threats linked to his reports on armed militant attacks in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, near Makurdi, Benue State.
Ajose, known for his fearless reporting in the Yoruba-language news media, had been independently investigating militia and insurgent activities in North-Central Nigeria.
On 11 June 2025, two days before the Yelewata massacre, he alerted police that militants were planning to attack displaced Christian families who had recently returned to the community. His warning went unheeded.
On the night of 13 June 2025, armed militants stormed Yelewata, torching buildings and killing fleeing residents. As many as 200 Christians were massacred, including four young Christian aides who worked with Ajose.
He had earlier hidden his family and narrowly escaped the attack himself.
Ajose also lost vital professional materials, including reports, equipment, and personal belongings, which were destroyed or carted away by the attackers.
Confirming the events, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Benue State Command, DSP Ibrahim Musa, said: “Mr. Ibikunle Ajose approached our office on 11 June 2025 to report credible intelligence about an impending attack in Yelewata. His information was detailed and accurate. Sadly, the following night, the massacre occurred, claiming the lives of many, including his staff. We are making every effort to locate Mr. Ajose and ensure his safety. The threats against his life are real, and our priority is to prevent further loss.”
Security agencies have confirmed that Ajose’s body was not among the victims recovered, but the attackers are believed to be actively hunting him.
His whereabouts remain unknown as police intensify efforts to secure him and his family.
For now, Mr. Ibikunle Ajose remains in hiding torn between his commitment to exposing the truth and the deadly consequences of reporting violence in Benue State.
