…Opposition accuses president of lethargy, blames APC for emboldening terrorists

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of indifference and lack of seriousness in addressing the security crisis in Benue State, following the massacre of over 200 persons, including women and children, in Yelewata community.

In a statement signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon Debo Ologunagba, the party described the incident as another horrifying chapter in Nigeria’s worsening security history under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government.

The PDP alleged that the attackers who continue to terrorise communities across Nigeria have been emboldened by what it termed President Tinubu’s lethargic response to national security and the reported complicity of his ruling party.

According to the opposition party, the APC government has failed to act decisively to confront terrorism and has allowed violence to spiral due to alleged political connections with extremist interests.

The statement maintained that President Tinubu should be held responsible for the killings taking place across the country, accusing him of lacking the will, urgency, and commitment expected of a commander-in-chief.

The PDP further said that instead of taking direct action or visiting the grieving communities, the president has remained distant while aides release what the party called “lame press statements” with no tangible action to restore security.

The PDP said that the Tinubu administration and the APC have become overwhelmed and have effectively abandoned their constitutional duty to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

It accused the president of being more focused on the 2027 elections and political calculations while citizens continue to die in large numbers.

The party claimed that under APC leadership, over 600,000 Nigerians have been killed in the last two years by various criminal groups, bandits, and terrorists.

The PDP called on President Tinubu to immediately visit the affected communities in Benue State, particularly Yelewata, to show leadership and take decisive action to end the killings.

It urged the president to act like a true commander-in-chief by confronting insecurity head-on and leading efforts to restore peace, particularly in regions most affected by violence.

The statement, however, commended security agencies for their continued sacrifices and bravery, and urged them not to relent in their mission to protect the country despite the alleged inertia of the political leadership.

The PDP also expressed deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the Benue massacre and in other parts of the country where violence has become routine.

The party insisted that the Federal Government must rise to its responsibility and warned that failure to act now could lead to further deterioration of Nigeria’s fragile security environment.
