The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially presented certificates of return to the newly re-elected Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, and his Vice, Mohammed Nadabo.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday at the commission’s office, marked the formal conclusion of the Area Council elections conducted on February 21, 2026.
During the presentation, the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Malam Aminu Idris, confirmed that the exercise covered all six area council chairmen, their deputies, and the 62 councillors who emerged victorious across the Federal Capital Territory.
Congratulating the winners, Idris described their success at the polls as a testament to public trust and urged the officials to view their mandates as a call to duty.
He emphasized the need for the elected representatives to work tirelessly to address the needs of their constituents while acknowledging the roles of the Nigeria Police Force and various political parties in ensuring a transparent and conclusive electoral process.
Speaking to journalists shortly after receiving his certificate, Chairman Maikalangu described the day as the final milestone of the election cycle. He expressed deep gratitude to the electorate and pledged to prioritize rural development during his new term.
Maikalangu announced that his administration would allocate 80 percent of its projects and programs to rural communities, noting that local government activities must remain centered on the needs of the local people.
The re-elected chairman further explained that infrastructural development would be distributed based on the specific peculiarities of each ward, identifying areas like Kabusa and Garki as requiring tailored governmental attention due to their size.
In a move toward reconciliation, Maikalangu extended an invitation to his political opponents, urging them to collaborate with his administration. He stressed that political rivals are not enemies and encouraged the sharing of ideas to move AMAC forward.
On his part, the Vice Chairman-elect, Mohammed Nadabo, assured residents of an “open-door policy,” stating that the administration would remain people-oriented.
“Water may be needed in some wards, while infrastructure or education may be needed in others. we do not create a questionable impression in the minds of our citizens; we are aware of the peculiarities and will work together with the resources at our disposal,” Nadabo stated.
The newly elected officials are expected to be sworn in following this official certification by the electoral umpire.
