The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered the deployment of additional security assets to Plateau State following a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday, March 31, saw unknown gunmen storm a popular bar in the area, leaving about 28 people dead and several others injured.
Earlier reports from the Plateau State Police Command confirmed 12 fatalities, including 10 men and two women, while injured victims were evacuated to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
The incident triggered widespread outrage, with the state government subsequently imposing a 48-hour curfew in the affected local government area.
Condemning the attack, the IGP commiserated with the state governor and residents of Plateau, particularly the affected families and members of the Angwan Rukuba community.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the police disclosed that the IGP had earlier deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Umar Shehu Nadada, to the state to assess the situation, coordinate ongoing operations, and strengthen security architecture.
“The Inspector-General of Police has further intensified operations through the deployment of additional tactical teams, Police Mobile Force units, and intelligence operatives, in collaboration with other security agencies, to address the situation and prevent further breakdown of law and order across the state,” the statement said.
The police boss noted that the deployments would remain in place until normalcy is restored, directing operational commanders to ensure visible policing and increased engagement with vulnerable communities.
He also urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, cooperate with security agencies, and avoid taking the law into their own hands, while promptly reporting any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
