The Nigeria Police Force has cautioned political actors over the growing trend of deliberate tearing, defacement, and destruction of political campaign banners, posters, and billboards nationwide ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Condemning the practice as political intolerance, the Force warned political thugs, hoodlums, and mischief-makers to desist immediately.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the Police emphasized that unlawfully removing or damaging another candidate’s campaign materials constitutes malicious damage, a criminal offense under Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law.

The Police stressed that political differences or party loyalty do not override anyone’s right to campaign freely or protect their property.

Reacting to the situation, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take proactive preventative measures, investigate reported incidents, and ensure that culprits face swift arrest and prosecution.

The IGP further warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit or facilitate these criminal acts will be held equally accountable.

The Police also adviced political parties, candidates, and supporters to conduct peaceful campaigns, emphasizing that Nigeria’s democratic process must be protected from intimidation, lawlessness, and political intolerance.
