The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon.Benjamin Kalu has congratulated Nigerian-born legal scholar, Professor Dapo Akande, on his election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), describing the achievement as a monumental victory for Nigeria and the African continent.

In a congratulatory statement issued on Wednesday, the Deputy Speaker praised Professor Akande, who hails from Oyo State, as an exceptional scholar of global standing whose ascent to the principal judicial organ of the United Nations reflects the calibre of talent Nigeria consistently contributes to the international arena.

Kalu recalled Professor Akande’s visit to the National Assembly on June 3, 2026, when he hosted the legal scholar alongside delegates from the British High Commission to formally register parliamentary backing for his ICJ bid.

“At the time, we celebrated his remarkable journey from Nigeria to the pinnacle of international law and expressed confidence that his wealth of experience and outstanding credentials would serve the cause of global justice. Today, that confidence has been rewarded,” the statement read.

He noted that Akande’s victory bolsters Africa’s representation and influence at the highest judicial bench in the world.

He also expressed firm confidence that Professor Akande’s vast expertise, rigorous grasp of international jurisprudence, and dedication to justice will enrich the work of the ICJ and strengthen the global rule of law.

“Professor Akande’s victory is a testament to the excellence that Nigeria continues to offer the world. Nigeria is proud of you, and Africa celebrates this remarkable achievement with you,” he wrote.
