Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has signaled a shift toward self-driven infrastructure development with the launch of 30 trucks to support road construction across the state.

The trucks were unveiled at the Government House in Maiduguri as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s ability to execute projects amid persistent security and logistical challenges.

Speaking at the event, Zulum said road construction in Borno remains difficult due to insecurity, noting that although the situation has improved compared to a decade ago, many contractors are still reluctant to operate in the state.

He explained that the unwillingness of external firms, combined with difficult terrain and lack of insurance coverage, has increased the cost and complexity of delivering road projects.

To address this, the governor said the government is prioritizing internal capacity by equipping the Ministry of Works, the Borno State Road Maintenance Agency, and other relevant departments to undertake construction directly.

“This approach will enable us to deliver projects more efficiently and reduce dependence on external contractors,” he said.

Zulum also disclosed that the state has invested over ₦3 billion in establishing a quarry plant in Zulika to supply construction materials.

The facility, with a production capacity of 120 tons per hour, is expected to support ongoing and future road projects, particularly in rural areas.

He listed key road corridors currently under construction to include Maiduguri–Monguno, Maiduguri–Bama, and Maiduguri–Gamboru Ngala, noting that some of the projects fall under federal jurisdiction.

The governor expressed optimism that the Federal Government would eventually assume responsibility for such roads.

He further revealed plans to acquire additional trucks and heavy equipment before the end of his administration to sustain the pace of infrastructure development.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Housing, Abubakar Ali Baware, said the newly acquired trucks and machinery have significantly enhanced the ministry’s direct labour capacity.

He added that the equipment would accelerate construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of roads across the state, supporting government efforts to improve connectivity and economic activities.
