Torrential rainfall has triggered devastating flooding in the communities of Garko, Matsaro, and Dibantu in Hadejia Local Government Area of Jigawa State, leaving hundreds of residents homeless and forcing Almajirai from a nearby Tsangaya school to flee for safety.

The floods, which struck late yesterday, submerged homes, destroyed farmlands, and damaged schools, plunging households into a humanitarian crisis.

An investigation by Nigerian NewsDirect revealed that no form of assistance has yet reached the affected communities from local, state, or federal authorities, nor from humanitarian organisations. Residents are urgently appealing for intervention.

“We strongly believe that if His Excellency, Governor Malam Umar Namadi, visits us personally, he will understand the seriousness of our plight. Perhaps his representatives are not giving him the true picture of what is happening here in Hadejia,” a resident lamented.

Frustration has mounted among community members, who questioned the absence of their elected representatives and called for immediate action.

“Where is our Senator? Where is our Member of the House of Representatives? Where is our Member of the State House of Assembly? Where is our Local Government Chairman? Where are our councillors? We want all of you to come and see our situation,” residents cried.

Several houses have collapsed under the weight of floodwaters, while large portions of farmland remain submerged, raising fears of severe food insecurity. The displaced, including the Tsangaya pupils, are now taking refuge wherever they can find shelter, underscoring the urgent need for relief materials, temporary accommodation, and medical support.
