FG unveils new curriculum, mandates trade subjects for JSS students

The Federal Government has introduced a revised school curriculum that makes the study of trade and vocational subjects compulsory for all Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS 1) students across Nigeria.

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), which announced the reform, explained that the new curriculum is aimed at equipping young Nigerians with practical skills and preparing them for self-reliance in a fast-changing economy.

Under the new framework, students will be required to take at least one trade subject alongside their core academic courses. Available trade subjects include solar photovoltaic installation, livestock farming, fashion design, carpentry, plumbing, and ICT-related fields.

NERDC’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Ismail Junaidu, said the reform reflects the government’s commitment to skills acquisition and reducing youth unemployment.

“This is a deliberate shift to ensure Nigerian students leave school not only with certificates, but with skills that can create jobs and drive the economy,” Junaidu stated.

Education experts described the move as timely, noting that it aligns with global trends in technical and vocational education. However, they warned that effective implementation would require massive investment in teacher training, infrastructure, and modern equipment.
