The Federal Government has announced that by 2027, secondary schools employing unqualified or uncertified teachers will lose their accreditation to serve as examination centres for major national exams, including the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Examinations Council (NECO), and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB).

The directive was issued through the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), which emphasized that only schools with registered and licensed teachers will be allowed to participate in conducting national examinations.

Registrar of TRCN, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, disclosed that the policy forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to professionalize teaching and ensure quality education delivery across Nigeria.

Ajiboye stressed that teaching is the “mother of all professions” and must not be left in the hands of quacks. He warned proprietors of both public and private schools to begin compliance, as the government would not extend the deadline.

“This is about the future of our children. No country develops beyond the quality of its teachers. By 2027, only schools that have qualified and licensed teachers will retain their WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB accreditation,” he said.

Education stakeholders welcomed the decision but urged the government to provide adequate teacher training programmes and incentives to avoid creating shortages in rural schools.
