FCT excluded from State Police plan — FG

The Federal government has clarified that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will not have its own police structure.

The Federal government noted that the recently signed constitutional amendment creating State Police does not apply to the FCT.

“Under the provisions of the upcoming legislation, the FCT will remain strictly under the territorial jurisdiction of the Federal Police. Unlike the 36 states of the Federation, the nation’s capital will not be granted a distinct State Police command of its own.
Instead, the administrative powers of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory will be clearly defined and circumscribed once the bill is officially enacted into law. Rather than exercising direct operational control over a localized force, the Minister’s statutory role will be legally limited to providing logistics and infrastructural support to the federal police units deployed within the territory,” the statement read.
