The family of Mr. Henry Tobins, a senior staff member of NNPC Exploration and Production Ltd. (NEPL), has called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate his death, which occurred on September 27, 2023, while he was reportedly on an official assignment.
The family said NEPL initially informed them that Tobins had drowned, adding that his body was being kept in a morgue in Egbema.
They alleged, however, that they later found the body in an uncompleted building.
According to them, a petition was submitted to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police on October 9, 2023, leading to an autopsy conducted in the presence of police officers, NEPL officials, and family members.
The autopsy reportedly suggested that the death was not accidental.
They further alleged that the company has failed to cooperate fully with police investigations, including ignoring summons to present staff members linked to the incident.
The family also claimed that an anonymous individual confessed to involvement in the incident prior to the autopsy, and the recording of this confession was handed over to the police.
While NEPL later offered ₦14 million for burial expenses, the family stated that they are more concerned about justice and accountability than financial compensation.
