…says Party attempting to rewrite history after earlier defection to APM

A former Agege Local Government Chairman, Ganiyu Egunjobi, and a former Agege Constituency II aspirant, Azeez Yusuf, have stated that they resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in July, weeks before the Lagos State chapter announced their expulsion.

The duo clarified this in a joint statement issued on Wednesday in reaction to their expulsion over alleged anti-party activities and disloyalty.

Lagos APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, announced the sanction on Wednesday, stating that the party invoked Article 9(5)(II) of its constitution to take disciplinary action against both former members.

Egunjobi and Yusuf had contested the APC primaries for Agege Constituencies I and II, respectively, but failed to secure the party’s tickets.

They subsequently obtained tickets to run for the seats on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

Responding to the sanctions, the politicians maintained that their departure preceded the party’s disciplinary declaration.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we resigned from the APC in July 2026, weeks before the party announced our purported expulsion on September 23.”

“We had already made our decision, communicated our position, and moved on politically. We subsequently joined the Allied Peoples Movement, and our resignation and defection were widely reported across several newspapers. The question, therefore, is simple: How can a party expel people who had already resigned from its membership? The latest announcement does not change our political status; we had already left,” they said.

They attributed their exit to the APC’s failure to address grievances arising from the primary elections, describing the September 23 announcement as a bid to distort facts.

“It is difficult to see the announcement as anything other than an attempt to rewrite a political history that has already moved on.”

:Announcing the expulsion of individuals who resigned weeks earlier is not a demonstration of political strength. Instead, it raises serious questions about respect for internal democracy, due process, and the right of party members to make legitimate political choices,” the statement added.

The APC had earlier insisted that the duo’s conduct amounted to anti-party activity and disloyalty, maintaining that aspirants who lose internal contests must accept the outcome or exhaust standard avenues of redress rather than migrate to rival platforms within the same electoral cycle.

The party dismissed their resignations as a belated, face-saving tactic meant to pre-empt disciplinary action.
