Epe Local Government Council of Lagos State, has advised residents to embrace waste-to-wealth initiative for environmental sustainability.
Ms Surah Animashahun, Chairman, Epe Local Government, gave the advice during a sensitisation programme on environmental sustainability in Epe on Wednesday.
She said that the waste-to-wealth initiative was a globally recognised concept that helps reduce joblessness and engages citizens in various vocational skills and productive activities.
According to her, the initiative is not only economically driven but also provides an avenue for cleaner communities, better hygiene, and public health enhancement.
Animashahun said that waste materials like plastics, metals, papers and organic waste could be transformed into useful products like bio-gas.
“This transformation creates a circular economy that empowers youths and women, ” she said.
She urged residents to take advantage of the opportunities by undergoing training sessions facilitated by the council and other partner organisations.
“With the right skills and tools, waste can become a valuable source of income,” she said.
The chairman added that the local government would soon launch a pilot project on waste collection and recycling, targeting households, schools, and markets to serve as role models in the community.
She also appealed to community leaders, religious institutions, and youth organisations to help spread awareness about the initiative.
She emphasized that collective action is vital for sustainable development and economic empowerment.
“This initiative can boost government earnings, social-economic development, human capacity building and youth empowerment,” she said.
