The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon (Obongemem) Ekperikpe Ekpo, PhD, has paid glowing tribute to former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency Arc (Obong) Victor Bassey Attah, as the elder statesman marks his 87th birthday.
In a statement signed by Louis Ibah, Spokesman for the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas).
The statement reads partly: “Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. (Obongemem) Ekperikpe Ekpo, PhD, has extended heartfelt felicitations to the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency Arc (Obong) Victor Bassey Attah, on the occasion of his 87th birthday.
“In his message, the Minister hailed Obong Attah as an extraordinary statesman and distinguished architect whose intellectual depth and foresight played defining roles in shaping the physical and political development of Akwa Ibom State.”
Ekpo further extolled Obong Attah’s courageous advocacy for resource control, fiscal federalism, and equitable national development—principles that established him as one of Nigeria’s most resolute voices for justice, equity, and a balanced federation.
He also commended the former Governor for using the celebration to publicly present his biography, ‘Attah: Architect of a New Dawn’, describing it as a work that enriches the nation’s intellectual and leadership heritage.”
The Minister noted that Attah’s contributions continue to serve as a guiding light for leaders who value justice, balanced governance, and the advancement of Nigeria’s democratic ideals. He said the elder statesman’s vision laid the foundation for the modern development strides enjoyed by Akwa Ibom today.
Ekpo also emphasised that Attah’s leadership transcended political office, pointing to his consistent advocacy for national unity, fairness, and a stronger federation built on shared prosperity.
He maintained that the values Attah championed remain relevant as Nigeria navigates its current developmental challenges.
The Minister went further to acknowledge the profound personal impact Attah had on his own political journey. He recalled how the former governor facilitated his emergence as Caretaker Committee Chairman and later Executive Chairman of Ika Local Government Area—roles that marked the beginning of his rise in public service.
He described Attah as a rare mentor whose guidance, compassion, and commitment to the upliftment of others embody the highest ideals of leadership. Ekpo added that the former governor has remained a stabilising father-figure whose influence cuts across political, ethnic, and generational boundaries.
The Minister prayed for God’s continued grace upon the former governor, wishing him long life, renewed strength, and lasting peace as he marks another milestone in service to humanity.
