Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has emphasized the need for improved relations between military personnel and civilians to address growing concerns over brutality and mistrust.

His comments come in the wake of a violent incident at Fayose Market in Ado Ekiti, where a confrontation between soldiers and traders left three individuals severely injured.

Speaking on Wednesday during a visit to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), where the injured victims are receiving treatment, Oyebanji condemned the turmoil that erupted on Tuesday, resulting in serious gunshot wounds and multiple injuries. The governor’s remarks were delivered by the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye.

Oyebanji expressed his displeasure over the incident, stating that it could have been prevented with better military-civilian relations. “This type of violence is intolerable in any civilized society. We must work towards a balance where both uniformed personnel and civilians respect each other,” he said.

The governor pledged to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable, adding that his administration would cover the medical expenses of the victims to aid in their recovery.

“We’re grateful that no lives were lost, but the injuries sustained are regrettable. Immediate action will be taken to investigate this matter thoroughly,” he stated.

Chief Medical Director of EKSUTH, Prof. Kayode Olabanji, reported that the victims are now stabilizing following prompt medical intervention, including the removal of bullets and treatment of their wounds.

Mr. Adeleye Adekunle, Chairman of Fayose Market, revealed that the conflict originated from a misunderstanding between a military officer and a trader. He expressed gratitude for the government’s swift action, noting that the situation could have escalated further without it.

Adekunle urged the community to remain calm and allow the government to take charge in resolving the issue through discussions involving all stakeholders.

Members of the governor’s entourage included security advisers and officials responsible for internal security and information, reflecting the administration’s commitment to maintaining order and upholding the law in Ekiti State.
