The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has downplayed the resignation of its 2018 governorship candidate, Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, saying his exit poses no threat to the party’s structure or future.
Spokesperson for the state PDP Caretaker Committee, Jackson Adebayo, stated on Friday that the party was relieved by Olusola-Eleka’s departure and would enjoy “relative peace” in his absence.
“We’re not going to miss him. He has been a redundant member for the past three years,” Adebayo told the News Men in Ado-Ekiti. “The party has since moved on.”
Olusola-Eleka, who served as deputy governor from 2014 to 2018 under former Governor Ayodele Fayose, formally resigned from the PDP in a letter dated July 24, addressed to the chairman of his Okeruku Ward 2 in Ikere-Ekiti.
In the letter, he expressed disappointment over what he described as the party’s deviation from its founding principles.
Reacting, Adebayo claimed members of Olusola-Eleka’s ward were celebrating his exit and emphasized that the PDP remained focused on building a strong platform ahead of the next governorship election in Ekiti.
“When a member feels his interests are no longer served by the party, he’s free to pursue them elsewhere,” he said.
