At least eight people, including a police inspector, have died in a multiple vehicle accident involving five articulated trucks on the Kara Bridge, inward Mowe, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Confirming the incident on Thursday at the crash scene, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, described it as a fatal collision that occurred at the border between Lagos and Ogun States.
“Five vehicles were involved, all articulated trucks. Three people have been rescued so far. As early as 5 a.m., our team, alongside LASTMA, the Road Safety Corps, and other agencies, have been on the scene,” the Commissioner stated.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accident was caused by a trailer that suffered brake failure, triggering a chain collision involving other vehicles.
Jimoh also confirmed that one of the casualties was a police inspector attached to his advance team who died while responding to the emergency.
“It’s very unfortunate that we lost one of our men who came with our advance team to salvage the situation,” he lamented.
The Commissioner cautioned drivers of articulated vehicles against reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance, which he blamed for most road tragedies.
“If they maintain their vehicles properly and drive responsibly, we won’t keep losing lives like this,” he warned.
As of press time, rescue operations involving the police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and other emergency services were still ongoing at the scene.
