In a major political shift at the National Assembly, six members of the House of Representatives have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during Thursday’s plenary session in Abuja.
The defections took place in the presence of the APC National Chairman, Dr Nentawe Yilwatda, and Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, marking another milestone in the ruling party’s growing influence across the country.
Five of the lawmakers, Obetta Chidi (Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South), Anayo Onwuegbu (Aninri/Awgu/Oji River), Dennis Agbo (Igbo-Eze North/Udenu), Martins Oke (Igbo Etiti/Uzo Uwani), and Nnolim Nnaji (Nkanu East/Nkanu West) — dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while Daniel Asama from Jos North/Bassa constituency in Plateau State defected from the Labour Party (LP).
Their formal letters of defection were read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who warmly received them into the ruling party.
According to the lawmakers, their decision to leave their former political parties was due to “protracted and irreconcilable crises” within the PDP and LP.
“You have taken the right decision by joining the ruling party. We welcome you warmly to the APC family,” Speaker Abbas told the defectors amid cheers from majority APC members.
The development comes just weeks after Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, officially joined the APC, signalling a new wave of political realignment in the South-East.
