Although the next general elections remain over a year away, political activities are already gaining momentum in Lagos State, with emerging alignments, silent consultations, and strategic positioning signaling an early start to the 2027 political race.
Within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), discussions around succession and future leadership are gradually intensifying. Party stakeholders are increasingly engaging in behind-the-scenes negotiations as interest groups begin to align with preferred aspirants ahead of the next governorship cycle.
Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains in office, but political observers say attention is slowly shifting toward who will eventually take over leadership of the state. While no official succession race has been declared, various political blocs are already positioning themselves for influence within the party structure.
The influence of national power brokers, including Pres. Bola Tinubu, continues to shape political calculations in Lagos, where loyalty, party structure, and longstanding alliances often determine political outcomes.
In several local government areas, consultations among party leaders, youth groups, and political interest networks are becoming more frequent. Though still informal, these engagements are seen as early indicators of what could become a highly competitive and strategically driven election cycle.
Political analysts note that Lagos remains a key stronghold in national politics, making its internal dynamics particularly significant ahead of 2027. They warn that early positioning could either strengthen party unity or deepen internal divisions if not carefully managed.
As the political atmosphere gradually thickens, stakeholders are calling for internal democracy, transparency, and inclusiveness within party processes to avoid a repeat of past internal disputes. For now, the race remains unofficial, but the groundwork for 2027 is clearly underway.
