Kalu backs Anioma state agitation, calls for peaceful engagement

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has urged proponents of Anioma State creation and other state creation movements across the country to remain peaceful and keep hope alive.

Kalu gave the charge during a courtesy visit to his office by members of the Anioma Traditional Council and Izu Anioma, a socio-political group representing communities in Edo and Delta States in the South-South region.

The Deputy Speaker described the House of Representatives as a melting point for addressing the challenges of the Nigerian federation, adding that the legislature is committed to providing practical solutions.

He noted that many states in Nigeria were created during the military era, often without adequate consideration for economic viability, geo-political balance, population, and other critical factors.

Kalu, therefore, urged proponents of Anioma State and other state creation movements to engage constructively with key stakeholders, including captains of industry, women and youth groups, and religious leaders, to ensure inclusiveness and broad-based support.

He also advised them to interface with state governors and members of State Houses of Assembly as part of efforts to advance their demands.

While assuring the delegation of the support of the National Assembly, Kalu emphasised the importance of peaceful advocacy in pursuing their objectives.

Earlier in his remarks, the leader of the delegation and Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Sen. Ned Munir Nwoko, said the group comprises traditional rulers and key stakeholders from the Anioma region.

He stated that the agitation for Anioma State is driven by the desire of the people to align more closely with their kith and kin in the South-East geopolitical zone.
