Democracy Day: Youth groups threaten showdown with anti-Tinubu protesters

A coalition of youth groups across Nigeria, under the umbrella of the Green Assembly Initiative, on Wednesday night issued a stern warning to any groups planning to disrupt its scheduled Democracy Day solidarity marches in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the Chairman of the Green Assembly Initiative, Duke Alamboye, cautioned against any attempts to incite unrest on June 12, urging Nigerians to uphold peace and democratic values.
He said: “No patriotic Nigerian should consider causing mayhem on June 12.We, the Green Assembly Initiative and other youth bodies, would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Nigerians and the current government for sustaining democracy in our country.”
He praised the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his cabinet, governors, elites, youths, and women for their roles in promoting democratic continuity, despite prevailing national challenges.
“While we acknowledge the difficulties we face as a nation, we also understand that developed countries have encountered similar obstacles on their path to growth and stability,” Alamboye added. “As youth leaders, we urge all Nigerians to take a moment to pray for our country, the presidency, and all levels of government.”
Addressing reports of planned protests in key cities, Alamboye emphasized that the Green Assembly Initiative is not affiliated with such demonstrations.
“We categorically state that we are not part of these plans and urge all Nigerian youths to remain peaceful and law-abiding. We also call on security agencies to remain vigilant and take action against anyone attempting to disrupt the peace and stability of the country,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Comrade Rikki Nwajiofor, Youth Speaker of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, commended President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” administration, noting that it has made commendable strides in the last two years.
He urged Nigerians to exercise patience and continue supporting the current administration, adding, “We believe in the unity of Nigeria and will continue to collaborate with the government to promote national development and unity, as currently being championed by President Tinubu.”
