Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday inaugurated four major projects completed by Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, commending the council’s efforts as a benchmark for grassroots development.
The ceremony took place at the rebuilt Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Secretariat.
The projects included housing units, a fully renovated local government secretariat complex, a 400-metre road, and a legislative building named after President Bola Tinubu.
All were initiated by the current council administration under Mr Sesan Olowa.
Sanwo-Olu recalled the secretariat was destroyed during the 2020 EndSARS protests, saying its restoration reflects the resilience and vision of local leadership.
“I am impressed by the Ibeju-Lekki leadership’s commitment.
“This is where development must start — at the grassroots. Local governments need empowerment and accountability to serve their people,” he said.
The governor added that good governance at this level is essential for rural development and community wellbeing.
He expressed hope the new projects would generate jobs and boost the council’s revenue.
Sanwo-Olu urged other council chairmen to follow Ibeju-Lekki’s example.
Olowa said the new facilities would improve staff productivity and service delivery.
“With these modern offices, staff can work more efficiently in an environment that encourages innovation.
“We are building an institution that better serves the people,” he said.
He also highlighted other initiatives, including introducing “Keke Jaja” tricycles for waste evacuation to enhance sanitation.
“We are not only constructing buildings but building systems that improve lives. From education to healthcare, every initiative aims to raise living standards,” Olowa added.
