A Kano State High Court has invalidated the dissolution of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) executive councils at the state, local government, and ward levels, declaring the decision of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) null and void.

In a ruling delivered on Tuesday, Justice Nasiru Saminu granted an ex parte order restraining the NWC from taking further steps regarding the party’s leadership structure in Kano pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The legal action, marked Suit No. K/06/2026, was instituted by Abdullahi Zubairu Imam and five others on behalf of the Executive Committees of the 44 Local Government Areas in the state. The plaintiffs challenged the national body’s directive to dissolve the elected structures.

Justice Saminu ordered all parties to maintain the status quo ante as of December 30, 2025, effectively reversing the NWC’s dissolution order.
After hearing arguments from the applicants’ counsel, K.K. Njidda Esq. and S.A. Muhammad Esq., the court ruled: “An order of interim injunction is hereby granted restraining the Defendant/Respondent… from appointing Caretaker Committees for the State, Local Government, and Ward levels Executives of Kano State or taking any further step in respect of the subject matter of this suit.”

The judge further granted the plaintiffs leave to serve the court processes on the NNPP National Secretariat in Abuja.

The leadership crisis in the Kano NNPP escalated after the suspension of the State Chairman, Hon. Hashim Dungurawa. Following his suspension, the State Executive Committee appointed Abdullahi Abiya as acting chairman.

However, the National Working Committee (NWC) responded by announcing the dissolution of the entire party structure in the state. This court order effectively halts that dissolution, affirming Abiya’s leadership in the interim.
