Court orders IGP, AGF to grant Adeniyi Adeyemi access to Lawyers

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), and the Nigeria Police Force to grant Adeniyi Adeyemi unimpeded access to legal counsel of his choice.

Adeyemi is linked to an alleged fraudulent outfit titled the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).

Justice Obiora Egwuatu issued the order on Thursday while ruling on an ex parte motion in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Adeyemi through his counsel, M.B. Abdulazeez.

The court directed that for the duration of Adeyemi’s detention, he must be granted access to legal practitioners of his choosing at all reasonable hours.

Adeyemi had also sought additional reliefs, including admission to bail, outright release from detention, and access to independent medical care by health practitioners of his choice.

His legal team further prayed the court to restrain the respondents, alongside their officers and agents, from interrogating him or compelling him to make, adopt, or endorse any statement in the absence of his counsel.

Justice Egwuatu, however, declined to grant the additional reliefs at the ex parte stage, ruling that the respondents must first be heard.

The judge subsequently ordered the AGF and the police to show cause within 72 hours why the remaining prayers sought by the applicant should not be granted.

The matter was adjourned until September 9, 2026, for the respondents to show cause.
Adeyemi had previously been declared wanted in connection with an investigation into the purported PFIPC scheme.
