Man, 27, in court for allegedly assaulting girlfriend over money

A 27-year-old man, Mr Philip Monday, on Wednesday appeared before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend after she refused to give him money.

Monday,​‌‌⁠⁠⁠‍⁠⁠‌‍‌​‌‍‍‍⁠‌​ a resident of Ungwan Gimbiya, Sabon Tasha, Kaduna State, is facing a charge of assault.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Aug. 28 at Ungwan Boro, Kaduna.

Leo alleged that Monday had been dating the complainant, Joan Samson, for about six months and moved in with her after losing his job at a factory.

According to the prosecutor, a fight broke out between the couple after Monday asked Samson for money and she refused to give him any.

He alleged that the defendant used a belt to beat the complainant and took away her Samsung phone, valued at N280,000.

The prosecutor further alleged that the defendant frequently demanded money from the complainant and threatened her whenever she refused to give him any.

He also alleged that the defendant sold household items to raise money.

He said the offence contravened the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with one surety in like sum.

Emmanuel ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed and provide evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

He adjourned the case until Sept. 30 for hearing.
