Consensus adoption: I was taken by surprise – Senator Adeola

Senator representing Ogun West, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola has revealed that he was surprised at his announcement as the consensus candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun state ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial elections.

Speaking at a stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun West Senatorial District converged on Ilaro on Sunday, Adeola noted that he was still fully prepared to participate in the party primary process before the announcement was made.

"I was taken by surprise when I was announced because I was still looking forward to the party primary," Senator Adeola stated.

He further acknowledged the collective efforts of President Bola Tinubu, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and elder statesmen such as former Governors Olusegun Osoba, Ibikunle Amosun, and Gbenga Daniel in facilitating the move.

The Senator emphasized the historical significance of the decision, describing it as an honor for the people of Ogun West after 50 years of Ogun State's existence.

He assured stakeholders that the newfound unity in the region would be preserved, declaring that from this point forward, the political leadership in Ogun West would function as "one big indivisible family."

This is as Political leaders at the stakeholders meeting pledged unwavering unity and rallying support for Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola.

Delivering his opening remarks, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Kunle Salako, reflected on the long-standing political aspirations of Ogun West. He noted that despite decades of effort, the district had yet to occupy the state's highest office.

"All of us know the political history of Ogun West since 1976 and all efforts have been made to lead the state. This time around, we are on our way to becoming successful," Dr. Salako stated. "One important element that we must take along to achieve this is unity to ensure that no one is left behind. Following the emergence of Senator Adeola, Ogun West must speak with one voice."

In his address, Ogun West APC Chairman, Alhaji Azeez Ekwueme, lauded the adoption of a consensus arrangement as a sign of progress, urging members to close ranks and work for the party's success.

Speaking on behalf of former governorship aspirants, Hon. Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade stressed that securing the candidacy was only the first step, calling for sustained grassroots mobilisation.

"It is not enough to have a consensus candidate; we must ensure victory. I urge those who are still divided to come together and ensure the reality of the Ogun West agenda," Akinlade said.

Hon. Abiodun Isiaq Akinlade described the development as historic, acknowledging the role of Governor Dapo Abiodun in the mediation process.

"For the first time in Ogun State, we are adopting the word consensus. This meeting is that of purpose. No matter the social media stories, we are now indivisible," he remarked.

In her remarks, the Ogun stete Deputy Governor, Engr.Noimot Salako-Oyedele, in her address, called for the inclusion of women in the campaign structure and future governance plans. She described the meeting as a significant milestone for the district.

"As a sitting government, I have seen how disadvantaged Ogun West has been. It is my prayer that God will give Senator Adeola the wisdom to deliver in this role. This project is my project," the Deputy Governor said.

The meeting had in attendance notable party chieftains including Senator Akin Odunsi, Senator Iyabode Anisulowo, Senator Gbolahan Dada, Senator Tolu Odebiyi, former Deputy Governor Alhaja Makanjuola Badru, Hon. Tunji Akinosi, and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Toyin Taiwo, among others.
