…Vows to prioritise inclusive access, resilient infrastructure
The Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, has been elected Vice Chair of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for 2025, marking a significant advancement in Nigeria’s growing influence within global digital policy and governance.
The election, which took place during the ongoing ITU Council session in Geneva, Switzerland, positions Nigeria in a key leadership role within the UN’s oldest specialised agency, which oversees global information and communication technologies (ICTs).
In a statement issued by Mrs Eunice Akro, Deputy Director and Head of the Press and Public Relations Unit at the Federal Ministry of Communications, the development was described as a strong affirmation of Nigeria’s increasing international standing in digital innovation, technology equity, and sustainable development.
Founded in 1865, the ITU plays a central role in connecting the world through inclusive and sustainable digital solutions, building ICT infrastructure across countries and supporting digital growth, especially in underserved communities.
Reacting to his appointment, Dr Tijani expressed gratitude to ITU Secretary-General Ms Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the ITU leadership, and member states for the confidence placed in him. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the Council’s objectives.
“Nigeria will continue to prioritise the development of resilient and inclusive digital infrastructure, ensuring meaningful access to technology for all, especially marginalised and rural communities,” he said.
The Minister remarked that the world is experiencing a pivotal period defined by rapid technological advancement and significant structural change, noting that Nigeria is ready to make constructive contributions to the global digital dialogue.
“We are witnessing firsthand the transformative capacity of digital technology — a tool that compels us to be more reflective, inclusive, and informed as we collectively shape the digital future,” Dr Tijani stated.
He also extended congratulations to the newly elected Chair of the ITU Council, Ms Cristiana Flutur of Romania, and pledged Nigeria’s full collaboration in advancing shared goals for global digital development.
