Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum sought the understanding and forgiveness of his citizens following a recent and deadly resurgence of insurgent attacks across the state.
Acknowledging his role as the Chief Security Officer, the Governor in a state broadcast yesterday admitted to the failures that have allowed a spike in violence, while simultaneously reassuring the public that the worst days are over.
Governor Zulum attributed the recent wave of attacks to the success of ongoing military operations, which he claimed have dislodged criminal elements from their forest strongholds, forcing them to infiltrate civilian communities in desperation.
He emphasized that while a decrease in past attacks had offered a reprieve, the government remained acutely aware that the root causes of the insurgency have yet to be permanently addressed.
The Governor also warned individuals within the state who provide logistics and intelligence to terrorists.
Labeling them enemies of the state, Zulum warned that the window for collaboration has closed.
"To those who feed them with information, shelter them and their sympathisers, and provide logistical support, your time is up. You will be hunted down and made to face the full wrath of the law,” Zulum declared.
Amidst the security crisis, Zulum expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the consistent release of funding for the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and other military operations.
He also acknowledged a recent sympathy visit by Vice President Kashim Shettima, reaffirming his unwavering loyalty to his predecessor.
Turning to the domestic political climate, the Governor urged the political class to exercise restraint as the 2026 election season intensifies.
He cautioned aspirants against exploiting the current security instability for personal ambition, reminding the state that power belongs to Allah and that leadership should not be a source of division.
As the state approaches the conclusion of the 2026 Ramadan fast, Governor Zulum called for heightened community vigilance.
He urged residents to monitor their surroundings closely during Iftar and the upcoming Eid celebrations, reporting any suspicious movements or strangers to the security agencies, including the military, police, and the Civilian JTF.
