Disappearance of Police Inspector raises alarms over internal accountability

The whereabouts of Inspector Bamilosin Johnson Ola, a veteran officer of the Nigeria Police Force, have become the subject of intense concern following a series of events that critics describe as a systematic pattern of professional persecution.

Inspector Ola, an Ekiti State native who enlisted in the force in 2009, was last known to be serving in the insurgency-prone region of Yobe State.

However, his journey there follows a turbulent career marked by what sources characterize as a principled stand against systemic corruption.

During his tenure with the Lagos State Police Command, Ola reportedly gained a reputation for resisting bribery and extortion, a stance that colleagues suggest led to his professional isolation and a series of punitive transfers.

The timeline of his ordeal escalated sharply in early 2023. Following a transfer to the Iyaganku Divisional Headquarters in Oyo State, a move seen by some as a reaction to his refusal to cooperate with illicit networks, Ola was promoted to the rank of Inspector. Just three days after this promotion, on May 26, 2023, he was shot in the arm by unidentified gunmen.

The attack allegedly followed multiple warnings for the officer to cease interference with drug trafficking arrangements. Despite receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Eleyele, no formal investigation into the assassination attempt was reportedly conducted.

The situation grew more dire in late 2025 when, shortly after recovering from his injuries, Ola was deployed to Damaturu, Yobe State.

While on patrol along the high-risk Bade Road, he reportedly survived a deadly ambush in which several of his colleagues disappeared. Since that engagement, Inspector Ola himself has not been seen or heard from.

The case has ignited a broader conversation regarding the safety of whistleblower officers within the force.

Observers point to the sequence of unexplained transfers to high-risk zones and the lack of protective measures following the 2023 shooting as evidence of a failure in internal accountability.

As his family and colleagues await news, the silence surrounding his disappearance continues to cast a shadow over the institutional mechanisms designed to protect those who uphold the law from within.
