Boat mishap claims six lives on Lagos Waterway as rescue operations continue

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have confirmed a tragic boat accident involving a Savvy Marine passenger vessel along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun water channel.

The incident occurred at about 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, while the boat was en route from Ilashe Beach House, according to a joint statement by the waterways authorities.

Following the receipt of a distress alert, LASWA and NIWA said their Search and Rescue (SAR) teams were immediately activated and deployed to the scene, working in close collaboration with the Marine Police and other emergency responders.

As of the time of filing this report, four passengers have been rescued alive and taken to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving medical attention.

However, six other passengers were recovered dead at the scene. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing to account for all persons involved in the mishap.

Preliminary findings suggest that the accident may have been caused by a collision with a submerged object, although the authorities noted that investigations are ongoing to fully ascertain the exact cause of the incident.

LASWA and NIWA assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted and that further updates would be provided as more information becomes available.

The authorities expressed their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased, while reaffirming their commitment to ensuring safety on Lagos inland waterways.

They also reiterated the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations, including proper navigation practices and compliance with the “no night travel” rule.
