…Says defunct politicians seeking relevance through PDP name
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has distanced itself from a recently announced political coalition in the state, issuing a strong warning to its members and supporters against joining what it called a self-serving arrangement led by “opportunistic politicians.”
In a statement on Tuesday, the PDP State Secretary, Mr Dan Nyikwagh, made it clear that the coalition has no links to the party and enjoys no endorsement from the PDP at any level.
“We caution our members to stay committed and not be swayed by individuals who once abandoned the party but are now attempting to regain political relevance by associating with the PDP’s name,” Nyikwagh said.
He argued that the promoters of the coalition had been conspicuously absent during pivotal moments for the party, including key elections and congresses, and were now seeking to capitalise on the PDP’s long-standing influence in Benue.
“If they genuinely command popular support, let them canvass for it based on their own performance, not by clinging to the PDP’s hard-earned reputation,” he added.
Nyikwagh also reiterated the loyalty of former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, to the PDP, describing him as a steadying influence in the party’s preparation for the 2027 general elections.
He called on party faithful to reject any overtures from the coalition and remain firm in their support for the PDP’s leadership and guiding principles.
“The PDP in Benue remains united, strategic, and forward-looking. Any effort to splinter our base through unfounded claims of affiliation must be firmly resisted,” the statement concluded.
