The Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) has fixed August 17, 2026, as the date for the next local government elections across the state.

In a statement issued in Bauchi, the commission explained that the announcement was in line with the Electoral Act 2022, which requires election notices to be issued at least 360 days before the scheduled polls.

Although Section 28 of the Act directly refers to elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), BASIEC noted that the Supreme Court’s ruling of February 20, 2025, on Rivers State established the provision as a binding standard for all state electoral bodies.

The commission added that Governor Bala Mohammed approved the decision in a bid to demonstrate his administration’s commitment to the rule of law and transparency in the electoral process.

BASIEC urged political parties, stakeholders, and the public to take note of the timeline and begin preparations ahead of the 2026 council polls.
