Amnesty International has condemned a deadly assault by gunmen on the Binnari community in the Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, which left at least 40 people dead.

The carnage, which unfolded on Friday, October 23, 2026, has been decried by the human rights organization as a display of utter disdain for the sanctity of life.

Initial police reports had confirmed 10 fatalities following the raid. However, as search-and-rescue operations continued through the day, rescue teams recovered numerous additional bodies, with search efforts still ongoing.

Local sources report that families are desperately searching for missing loved ones amidst a community left devastated by the violence.

Beyond the heavy loss of life, the attackers left a trail of total destruction. Gunmen wantonly set fire to residential homes, shops, foodstuffs, and motorcycles. The aftermath has left parts of the settlement littered with corpses, some burned beyond recognition.

Condemning the government’s security responses, Amnesty International argued that Nigerian authorities continue to leave vulnerable rural communities in northern regions entirely at the mercy of armed groups who operate with absolute impunity.

The organization emphasized that issuing routine statements of condemnation is no longer sufficient and demanded a genuine, visible commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

Amnesty called for an immediate, impartial investigation into the massacre, the provision of adequate reparations for survivors, and swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice to break the cycle of emboldened lawlessness.
