Eight months after the lifeless body of a 61-year-old retired teacher was discovered in the toilet of her residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Police Command has arrested the suspected killer.
The victim, Mrs. Adetotun Adeteju Oluwaseun, popularly known as “Mama Teacher,” was allegedly murdered at her home in Agbaakin Emere, Bode-Olude, Abeokuta, on February 27, 2026, shortly after returning from a retirement celebration organized by her colleagues.
Her body was discovered the following day, February 28, inside the toilet of her residence.
Following a sustained investigation, the case was transferred from the Bode-Olude Police Division to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran.
The investigation ultimately led to the arrest of the principal suspect, Saburi Lateef Ayinde, popularly known as “Oki-Ocean,” on October 19.
In his statement to the police, Ayinde allegedly confessed to killing the retired teacher following a dispute over N3.45 million that he claimed to have entrusted to her for safekeeping.
According to the suspect, the deceased had promised to add N1.55 million to the amount, bringing the total to N5 million, which he intended to use to purchase a vehicle.
“On Friday, February 27, I went to meet Mama Teacher at her home in the evening at about 6 PM and asked her about the money. I have always been asking her about it. I kept N3,450,000 with her, and she promised to add N1,550,000 to it to make it N5 million so I could get a car. But when I kept asking, she kept dribbling me.”
Ayinde stated that an argument ensued when he demanded that the deceased return his money.
He alleged that Oluwaseun threatened to raise an alarm and ordered him to leave her apartment. The suspect said he followed her to the toilet, where he picked up a cutlass he found on the ground.
“I held it and asked her to give me my money. As she was about coming out, I drew her back and I macheted her with the cutlass. I macheted her neck, hand, and laps, and she fell. I then carried her and placed her on the toilet seat,” he said.
According to Ayinde, he remained in the house briefly because he noticed a neighbor was outside and he did not want to be seen leaving the premises.
He further claimed that the deceased was still attempting to speak after the attack before he moved to the parlor, where he sat and regretted his actions.
He added that he later took the victim’s mobile phone after discovering it was not password-protected.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated that the stolen phone played a crucial role in the investigation.
Babaseyi explained that detectives tracked the phone and used information obtained from it to establish facts that ultimately linked the suspect to the crime.
He added that the suspect would be charged in court after the conclusion of the investigation and the clearance of all outstanding facts.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the investigating officers for their persistence and professionalism in unraveling the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The command also urged residents to remain security-conscious and warned against taking the law into their own hands.
Babaseyi advised members of the public to be cautious about the people they trust and confide in, while urging them to remain patient and avoid actions driven by anger.
“Don’t take laws into your hands, as you may regret your action. Be patient and don’t be quick to anger.”
