Airtel suspends airtime, data borrowing services nationwide

Telecommunications provider Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, affecting prepaid subscribers who rely on borrowing options to stay connected between recharges.

In a statement issued on April 17, 2026, the company confirmed that the affected services, commonly used by customers to access airtime or data on credit, have been halted until further notice. The move comes amid what Airtel described as a need to align its operations with evolving regulatory and operational requirements.

Despite the suspension, Airtel assured customers that regular airtime and data purchases remain fully available through its existing channels, emphasizing that core service delivery across its network will not be disrupted.

Speaking on the development, the company’s Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the decision as a “necessary and responsible step,” stressing that the operator remains committed to compliance, transparency, and consumer protection.

He added that Airtel will continue to prioritize innovation while adapting to Nigeria’s changing digital and regulatory landscape.

The development mirrors broader shifts within the telecom sector, where operators are increasingly reviewing credit-based offerings amid concerns around sustainability, regulatory compliance, and customer debt exposure.

Airtel noted that updates regarding the possible restoration of the services will be communicated in due course.

As one of the country’s leading telecom providers and a subsidiary of Airtel Africa Plc, Airtel Nigeria serves millions of subscribers across voice, data, and mobile money services in Nigeria.
