Airtel Africa and SpaceX have announced a successful pilot of data and messaging services via Starlink Mobile in Kenya.

This achievement marks a significant milestone in the mission to provide satellite-to-mobile connectivity across Airtel Africa’s 14-market footprint.

The testing was conducted specifically in no connectivity zones, remote locations where traditional terrestrial mobile signals are unavailable.

In these areas, Starlink Mobile was activated seamlessly, allowing standard 4G-compatible smartphones to connect directly to Starlink’s constellation of 650 satellites.

During the pilot phase, the satellite link successfully supported light-data applications essential for daily communication and commerce. Users were able to maintain connectivity through WhatsApp calling and messaging, Google Maps, and Facebook Messenger.

The connection also facilitated successful financial transactions via the Airtel app, proving that essential services can remain functional even in the most isolated regions.

Sunil Taldar, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, expressed his enthusiasm for the progress made since the initial partnership announcement. He noted that the testing in Kenya serves as a testament to the company’s commitment to expanding global access and ensuring customers remain connected when traveling beyond the reach of the terrestrial network.

Following the insights gained from the Kenyan trials, Airtel Africa and Starlink Mobile intend to scale the service across all 14 of Airtel’s African markets, subject to individual country-specific regulatory approvals.

The partnership is already looking toward the next phase of development, which includes the integration of Starlink Mobile V2 technology.

This upcoming advancement is expected to introduce full voice calling capabilities and expanded data speeds, eventually enabling true broadband connectivity directly to mobile handsets without the need for specialized hardware.
