AAC raises alarm over alleged attack on Sowore during June 12 protest

The African Action Congress (AAC) has raised alarm over what it described as an attack on its presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, during the June 12 Democracy Day protest in Abuja organised by the Take It Back Movement and other civil society groups.

In a press statement issued on Monday, signed by Rex I. Elanu, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, the AAC alleged that operatives of the Nigeria Police Force sprayed an unidentified chemical substance into Sowore’s face during the protest, causing him to collapse and temporarily lose consciousness.

The party described the incident as “deeply alarming,” saying it raises concerns about the use of excessive force against opposition voices and peaceful protesters in the country.

The AAC also referenced past incidents involving Sowore, including alleged assaults, court-related confrontations, and previous injuries, arguing that there is a pattern of persecution against him over the years.

It further cited historical cases such as that of former Senate President Chuba Okadigbo, linking past political clashes and alleged exposure to tear gas at rallies to broader concerns about the treatment of opposition figures in Nigeria.

The statement alleged that Sowore has faced repeated harassment, including physical attacks, legal actions, and restrictions, which the party described as politically motivated.

The AAC called on the international community, human rights organisations, and democratic institutions to intervene and monitor what it termed escalating threats against opposition activists in Nigeria.

The party warned that continued intimidation of political actors and protesters could undermine democratic freedoms and citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly.
