The ancient town of Ikire in the Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State is in mourning following the reported passing of its traditional ruler, the Akire of Ikire land, Oba Olatunde Falabi.

The monarch, who celebrated his 91st birthday in January 2026, reportedly transitioned on Saturday, February 28.

While the palace and the Osun State Government have yet to release an official statement regarding the passing or the circumstances surrounding it, the news has cast a somber mood across the state.

Oba Falabi’s reign was marked by his transition from a distinguished professional career into traditional leadership, bringing a wealth of corporate and scientific experience to the throne.

Before his ascension, Oba Falabi was a highly respected figure in the pharmaceutical industry. A trained pharmacist and entrepreneur, he served as the Commercial Manager for Roche Nigeria Limited in Lagos and later transitioned into large-scale farming and private business as the CEO of Oba Falabi (Nigeria) Ltd. His commitment to social development was further institutionalized through the Oba Falabi Foundation, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, focusing on community empowerment and philanthropy.

His death marks the end of an era for the Irewole Local Government, as residents remember him not just as a custodian of culture, but as a modernizer who bridged the gap between traditional heritage and professional excellence.

Details regarding the traditional funeral rites and the commencement of the mourning period are expected to be announced by the kingmakers in the coming days.
